P&I | Abbreviation for "Protection and Indemnity," an insurance term. |

Pallet | A platform with or without sides, on which a number of packages or pieces may be loaded to facilitate handling by forklift. |
Panamax Tanker | A liquid cargo vessel of 50,000 to 70,000 dwt. |
Panamax Vessel | The largest size vessel that can traverse the Pananma Canal. Current maximum dimensions are: Length 294.1 meters (965 feet); width 32.3 meters (106 feet); draft 12.0 meters (39.5 feet) in tropical fresh water; height 57.91 meters (190 feet) above the water. |

Pier | The structure perpendicular to the shoreline to which a vessel is secured for the purpose of loading and unloading cargo. |
Piggyback | A transportation arrangement in which truck trailers with their loads are moved by train to a destination. Also known as Rail Pigs. |
Plimsoll Mark | A series of horizontal lines, corresponding to the seasons of the year and fresh or saltwater, painted on the outside of a ship marking the level which must remain above the surface of the water for the vessel's stability. |
POD |
Abbreviation for:
- Port of Discharge - Port of Destination - Proof of Delivery. A document required from the carrier or driver for proper payment. |
POL |
Abbreviation for:
- Port of Loading - Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricants. |
Prepaid | Freight charges paid by the consignor (shipper) prior to the release of the bills of lading by the carrier. |
Primage |
A charge paid by shippers to ship agents for services provided by the agent in Turkish and Greek ports,
generally for loading activities conducted by port stevedores.
It is not an actual contractual term so the obligation to pay does not depend on its inclusion in the Bill of Lading.
Turkey: 3% on Total Ocean Freight including all surcharges and intermodal charges. Greece: 3% Piraeus, 5% Salonika (except on cargo originating in Bulgaria). |
